Sample collection for research (UK patients only)

Calling r(20) families in the UK...individuals aged >16+

WE NEED YOUR HELP for research – but you only have until 1st Oct 2024!

If you didn’t provide a blood sample for the Illumina study last year, we now only have until 1st October 2024 to collect additional samples for future research. We have options to collect from adults:

  • blood samples (preferred), or
  • saliva samples (for those unable to provide 14mls of blood, or have capacity to consent).

We have a separate route for children <16 yrs with less urgency… more details to follow

Here’s a few more details about what this is for, your options and what you need to do:

What’s this for?

This is a request to join the NIHR BioResource Research Tissue Bank to make your genetic profile and medical records available for research. This research may include research into ring chromosome 20, although you may be invited to participate in other research. By joining you consent to share your details and to be contacted for research, but you are under no obligation to participate in all or any research projects if you don’t want to.

Your options (if you’re >16 yrs):

  1. Provide a blood sample at your nearest BioResource centre. (You will need to attend an appointment before 1st Oct)
    • you must have capacity to consent to join the BioResource i.e. be able to understand that your data may be used for research and be able to write and sign your name.
  2. If you are unwilling or unable to provide a blood sample, a saliva collection kit can be sent to your home.

If you’re happy to participate (blood or saliva), or want more information before you decide, please contact [email protected] asap
so we can help make this happen.

What’s in it for me?

This is a one-off opportunity for adults with r(20) to help with research, so you could really be helping others as well as yourselves, by participating through providing a small blood sample in the next 3 weeks.

Researchers can’t research r(20) without YOU! 🙏🙏🙏
