Highlights vom Renntag in Brighton

We asked our team of volunteers to tell us their personal highlights from the day,
here's what they said...

Great day. Really good to catch up with people I knew and lovely to meet new families. Also met VIP’s from research and other medical professionals. It’s good to know someone will be thinking about Ring20.

After months of planning, it was a joy to wake up in Brighton to find the weather had smiled on us for our charity raceday! I arrived early at the racecourse to find a friendly team eager to help us, and a stunning view of the finish line from the hospitality suite. It was fun to finally meet other volunteers in person, all excited to get started, and looking great in our purple Ring20 t-shirts. As well as information and leaflets about r(20) and what Ring20 does as a charity, we had sweets, chocolates and a ‘find the continents’ game for children featuring our Superhero mascot Otsi. My son was pleased to meet Elin dressed as Otsi to show her his very own Otsi doll! The best part of the day was that many people came up to me to speak about the charity, about their own experiences of epilepsy, and how well the day seemed to be going – and the owner of a winning racehorse who gave us £40 for the pot! It was a fun day out, and a great way to spread the word about r(20) and Ring20!

It was an absolute honour to be representing Ring20 at the racecourse, where we had the opportunity to raise more awareness on r(20) and rare epilepsies - which many people are not aware of. It was a great day, with a lot of great people whom I had the pleasure of meeting, and although we were not familiar with each other one thing bought us together and it was the spirit to raise more awareness and bring changes for patients struggling with rare conditions who have been overlooked. It was a pleasure of mine to have been part of a family that genuinely wants to bring positive changes 🙂

The race-day was a great opportunity to fundraise and raise awareness of r(20), in a family-friendly atmosphere. It was my first day working as an intern with Allison and the rest of the Ring20 team, so you could say I had a 'baptism of fire'. My highlights of the day included dressing up as Otsi, the Ring20 mascot, and interacting with the children, awarding prizes to the race winner and judging the 'Best Turned-Out Horse', which was extremely difficult, as all the horses looked amazing. This event also allowed me to meet Allison and the Ring20 team in-person, helping to foster strong relationships that are invaluable when working in a team.

As a university student studying Neuroscience, I never imagined that a chance encounter would lead me into the world of horse racing and a tight-knit community fighting to raise awareness for a rare epilepsy condition called Ring Chromosome 20 Syndrome, or r(20). My involvement began when I learned about Ring20 Research and Support—a charity dedicated to helping those living with this rare form of epilepsy. Shocked that I hadn’t come across the condition before in my studies, I was compelled to get involved, and volunteering at their charity horse racing day in Brighton felt like the perfect opportunity. The day was one I’ll never forget. Set against the scenic backdrop of Brighton’s racecourse, the atmosphere buzzed with excitement and anticipation. As a volunteer, my main task was helping with fundraising efforts, guiding guests, and spreading awareness about r(20). But what struck me most was the incredible community I encountered. I met families who live with the daily challenges of r(20), each with their own unique story of courage and resilience. From parents of young children to adults managing seizures, every conversation left me more inspired. The bond between these families was palpable; they weren’t just attendees—they were a family brought together by the shared mission of fighting this rare disease.

Brighton was easily one of my favourite trips. Starting the morning with a delicious breakfast (Legends!!!) with some friends including Kallif, Allison, Elin and David. I also had the pleasure of meeting some new people who I felt I got on very well with, including Ash and Elin. We worked together at the racecourse to promote Ring20 Research Support UK. The next day I went to the same place for breakfast and it was incredible once again. I decided to go to the aquarium having a shark and sea turtle swim over my head. An incredible weekend but my favourite part was seeing my friends from the charity (Ring20).

Race 3 has to be a forever memory for me, the Ring20 Memorial Stakes titled in memory of Ella, Sebastian and Rachel - our 3 young people who sadly lost their lives to r(20). On this day we remember you...

Brighton race day was good fun! I spent much of the day in our hospitality box with our VIP guests. We had a great view of the racecourse and interrupted our interesting conversations to watch each race. Our guests all had a different interest and perspective regarding r(20). Not only was it an opportunity for Ring20 staff and volunteers to catch up with each of them, but they were also able to share interesting ideas with one another. We hope that some great ideas regarding research and understanding of r(20) syndrome will develop from here. Our volunteers worked really hard before, during and after the event to ensure that it went smoothly and that everyone had a good time. A special thank you to our sponsors for enabling us to host this excellent event!
